Tequila Bottles: Sizes, Shapes, Colors and Custom Designs

A buyer's guide to tequila bottles: standard sizes, heavy-base clear glass, blue-and-white and colored designs, cork closures, bottle prices and custom molds.

Tall heavy-based clear tequila bottle with a wooden bar-top stopper beside agave leaves
Short answerA tequila bottle is usually a tall, clear glass bottle of 750 ml (25.4 US fl oz) in the US or 700 ml (23.7 fl oz) in the EU, with a heavy base and a bar-top cork stopper. Clear super flint glass is the most common choice because it shows the color of blanco, reposado and añejo tequila. Fancy tequila bottles add decoration such as blue-and-white painted designs, colored coatings, embossing or sculpted shapes, often on a custom mold.

What does a typical tequila bottle look like?

Walk down a tequila aisle and most bottles share a few traits. They are tall or squared, made of very clear glass, and sit on a thick base that makes the bottle feel heavy. The closure is usually a cork stopper with a wooden, metal or glass head rather than a plain screw cap.

That look developed because tequila competes in a premium, gift-driven category. Shoppers pick up the bottle, feel its weight and judge quality partly from the glass. For a new brand, matching those cues is the baseline; standing out comes from shape, color and decoration.

What size is a standard tequila bottle?

The bottle size is set by the market you sell into, not by the spirit. For full-size retail bottles, 750 ml is the norm in the US and 700 ml in the EU and UK. The table below shows the formats you will see most often.

Size US fl oz Typical use
50 ml 1.7 Miniatures, samplers, hotel and airline
200 ml 6.8 Small flasks, gift packs
375 ml 12.7 Half bottle, trial size
700 ml 23.7 Standard size for EU and UK
750 ml 25.4 Standard size for the US and many other markets
1,000 ml 33.8 Liter bottle, duty-free and some Latin American markets
1,750 ml 59.2 Large "handle" format, mostly value brands

Giant tequila bottles of 3 liters or more are made for display and promotions. They need dedicated molds and special packing, so treat them as a custom project. For the full rules on which sizes are allowed where, see our liquor bottle sizes guide.

Why are tequila bottles so heavy and so clear?

The heavy base

A heavy-base bottle puts extra glass in the bottom, sometimes well over 1 cm (0.4 in) thick. It lowers the center of gravity, makes the bottle feel expensive and creates a lens effect that catches light. A lightweight 750 ml spirits bottle may weigh around 400–500 g (14–18 oz), while heavy-base premium bottles often weigh 700 g (25 oz) or more.

The trade-off is cost: more glass per bottle, fewer bottles per pallet, and higher freight. If you are building a mid-price brand, a moderate base can give most of the visual effect for less money. Our square super flint spirits bottle with heavy base is a common starting point in 500, 700 and 750 ml.

Super flint glass

Tequila color is part of the product story. Blanco is water-clear, reposado is pale straw and añejo is amber. Standard flint glass has a slight green or blue tint that can dull these colors, especially through a thick base. Super flint (also called extra flint) has lower iron content and looks brighter. Our guide to flint vs super flint vs extra flint glass explains the difference in detail.

Why are some tequila bottles blue and white?

The blue and white tequila bottle is one of the most searched bottle styles. It borrows from hand-painted Mexican ceramics, with cobalt-blue patterns on a white ground. Some bottles in this style are actual ceramic; many others are glass made to look like ceramic.

On glass, you can create the same effect in several ways:

  • Spray coating the whole bottle opaque white, then applying a blue pattern by decal or screen printing.
  • Screen printing white and blue directly onto clear glass, leaving some areas transparent.
  • Frosting the bottle and printing a blue pattern over it for a softer look.

Other colors follow the same logic. A green tequila bottle, black tequila bottle, red or purple bottle is usually made by spray coating clear glass, because furnace-colored glass in unusual shades requires large dedicated runs. Our spray-coated 750 ml liquor bottle shows the approach. For how each technique works, read the glass bottle decoration methods guide.

What shapes do fancy and unique tequila bottles use?

Shape is where cool tequila bottles separate themselves from the shelf. Common directions include:

  • Square and rectangle bottles: strong shoulders, flat faces for labels, efficient packing.
  • Tall, slim bottles: read as elegant and stand above neighbors on a back bar.
  • Circle or ring bottles: a round, flat body, sometimes with an opening through the middle.
  • Sculpted bottles: guitars, skulls, animals, agave-leaf reliefs or faceted crystal-look surfaces.
  • Embossed bottles: an agave plant, logo or town name molded into the glass.

Some decorative tequila bottles add accessories, such as a small bell or charm hung from the neck on a cord. These are usually separate items attached during packing rather than part of the glass.

Every sculpted shape needs a custom mold, and very complex forms can be harder to fill, label and pack. Our article on unique liquor bottle designs covers how to keep a striking shape manufacturable.

Which closure works best on a tequila bottle?

Most tequila uses a bar-top stopper: a synthetic or natural cork shank fitted to a decorative head. The head is the part customers touch, so brands customize it in wood, zinc alloy, acrylic or glass. A 21.5 mm synthetic cork stopper with a custom wood or metal top is a typical specification.

The shank must match the bottle's bore with a little compression, so order bottle and stopper together and test the fit. Value tequilas sometimes use aluminum ROPP or screw caps, which are cheaper and faster to apply on a line. Our cork stoppers guide explains shank sizes, head materials and testing.

Where must tequila be bottled?

Tequila is a protected designation of origin. It can only be produced in Jalisco and designated areas of a few other Mexican states, under Mexico's official tequila standard. In general terms, tequila labeled 100% agave must be bottled within that territory, while standard tequila may be shipped in bulk and bottled elsewhere by authorized bottlers.

This affects your supply chain. If you sell 100% agave tequila, your empty bottles must be delivered to a bottling plant in Mexico. Confirm current requirements with the tequila regulatory council and your producer before you plan logistics.

How much does a tequila bottle cost?

The tequila bottle price that matters to a brand is the empty packaging cost. For stock spirits bottles of 500–750 ml, reference FOB prices on our catalog range from about $0.22 to $0.80 per piece before decoration. Add the stopper, any decoration, a gift box if used, and freight to Mexico or your bottler.

Main cost drivers:

  1. Glass weight: heavy bases add material and freight.
  2. Glass color: super flint costs more than standard flint; coatings add a process step.
  3. Decoration: each screen print color or decal is a separate operation.
  4. Custom mold: a one-time tooling cost and usually a higher minimum order.

Stock bottles start at around 5,000 pieces on many of our spirits items. Private-mold bottles carry a one-time mold cost and are usually quoted at higher minimums.

Key takeaways

  • The standard tequila bottle is 750 ml (25.4 fl oz) in the US and 700 ml (23.7 fl oz) in the EU.
  • Heavy bases and super flint glass signal quality but add cost and freight weight.
  • Blue-and-white, green, black and other colored looks are usually made by coating and printing clear glass.
  • Sculpted, square and ring shapes need custom molds; plan filling and packing early.
  • Bar-top cork stoppers are the norm; test the shank against the bottle bore.
  • 100% agave tequila is bottled in Mexico, so plan delivery of empty bottles accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a standard tequila bottle?

In the United States the standard tequila bottle is 750 ml (about 25.4 US fl oz). Bottles for the European Union are usually 700 ml (about 23.7 fl oz), and 1 liter and 375 ml bottles are also common. Always confirm the sizes allowed in each market you sell into.

Why are tequila bottles so heavy?

Many premium tequila bottles use a thick glass base and heavier walls to feel substantial in the hand and to stand out on the shelf. A heavy-base 750 ml bottle can weigh roughly twice as much as a lightweight one. The extra glass raises unit cost and freight cost, so it is a branding decision rather than a technical need.

Why are some tequila bottles blue and white?

Blue-and-white tequila bottles imitate hand-painted Mexican ceramics, a decorative style strongly associated with the country. Some are true ceramic bottles; others are glass that has been spray coated white and then decorated with blue decals or screen printing to achieve a similar look.

Can you buy empty tequila bottles in bulk?

Yes. Brand owners and distilleries buy empty tequila bottles from glass suppliers by the pallet or container. Stock spirits bottles typically have minimum orders of a few thousand pieces, while custom-molded bottles usually require larger runs.

How much does an empty tequila bottle cost?

For stock 500 to 750 ml spirits bottles, reference factory prices are often in the range of about $0.22 to $0.80 per piece before decoration, closure and freight. Heavy bases, colored glass, coatings and custom molds all increase the price.

Can I get a custom tequila bottle made?

Yes. A glass factory can build a custom mold from your drawing or a reference bottle, produce samples for approval and then run mass production. Embossed logos, unusual shapes and decorated finishes are all possible, with mold cost and minimum order depending on the design.
